Surviving the Age of Nukes
One has to wonder with the development of more deadly weapons every year, will humanity eventually wipe itself out? The human race has placed itself in a never ending race by countries to try and stay ahead of each other in weapons development. Why is that and is there any way out of this mess? The question why has several answers. One answer is some countries want the power to be able to threaten the others to get what they want. If we go back thousands of years these reasons were the same reason for building the biggest and best military forces and including the latest weapons of the time. Another reason is a country doesn’t want to be rendered helpless because it let others gain a military advantage over it. Then there is the third reason, which is pride. Today nuclear weapons not only indicate enormous destructive power, but also a nuclear nation may want them as a status symbol.
Basically, countries do not trust each other and even allies may be allies only because they have the same basic interests and the level of distrust is less between them. This certainly does not mean there is 100 percent trust between allies. Take the case where one of our strongest allies was caught spying on us. This was not the first time either. We probably spy on everyone as do other powerful countries. Today some of the methods of spying are different than what they used to be. For millennia the method which was used was to send in human spies who would worm their way into positions of trust. Roman spies would send secret messages back on tablets covered with wax which was then removed to reveal the message. Hardly a trustworthy method but one of the best they had. This has changed so much since the dawn of electronics.
Spying has become routine with devices monitoring our every move and conversation. There are now billions of cameras in the world stationed all throughout areas. These cameras can be hacked and reveal everything they saw. Our phone calls have been monitored for many years and this is only the tip of the iceberg. We have devices which can see through walls and hear conversations from inside buildings without having to plant bugs in them. A device just aims a beam at a pane of window glass and everything people say in that room is heard.
Satellites follow our every move and anything we say or do is watched. There is really no privacy for people anymore and they better not write anything controversial on social media because it will follow them for the rest of their life, even if they wrote it when they were a child.
Mistrust exists not only between nations, but between people. It used to be tribes would war against each other and this went on for hundreds of years until the reason for it was sometimes forgotten but the hate still existed. Today we have a situation where hate for reasons which have faded is being back to the forefront in this country. If we can’t trust each other, how can nations trust each other? Without trust we can never end the spiral of advanced weapons development. It does make one wonder about other life in the universe. Most scientists agree there has to be other intelligent life besides us. How many planets have been destroyed for the same reasons that are developing on earth and will we eventually do the same thing? I would hope not, but all the signs are pointing in that direction. The doomsday clock keeps moving closer to midnight. That is a clock maintained by scientists who study the current state of affairs and as things get worse move it closer to midnight. This year the hands on the clock were move to 90 seconds before midnight. At midnight nuclear war will start.
How can the nations of the world ever trust each other? The answer is they will never completely be able to. In order for us to advance past this dangerous point in our existence some outside force would be needed which would impose a law against further weapons development and destruction of all existing nukes. Those who disobeyed would have to be punished somehow which would hurt them very badly financially and the site developing the weapons destroyed. I believe the only way this could happen is if extraterrestrials came to earth and enforced this. I just don’t see us being able to do it ourselves.
Things could even be worse than we know. We have no idea what some of the advanced weapons the U.S. possesses and certainly don’t know what China and Russia have or are developing. There are the ones we have all heard about such as hypersonic ballistic missiles capable of changing direction in flight to avoid being shot down, but there have been rumors of other weapons which might be even deadlier. While I don’t believe it, there have been many rumors about the United States having time travel devices. If this were true it would be even more dangerous than a nuclear weapon and unstoppable.
When we talk about other planets and civilizations wiping themselves out, we have to point to Mars as a possible planet where this has happened. An isotope was found in the atmosphere of Mars which is said to only be caused by a nuclear explosion and there are areas on Mars which look like they were once occupied. So much of this has been covered up. That is why I have to wonder what will happen if private space carriers are allowed to go there. Will they be sworn to secrecy or not allowed in certain areas?
There are even areas of earth which are ancient and show signs of ancient nuclear explosions. Could there have been other races which existed on earth and reached a point where they went to nuclear war with each other and wiped each other out? What would have happened to us if the world had nuclear weapons during World War II. We know what eventually happened to Japan and now think about thousands of nuclear weapons going off. We might have destroyed the planet.
I don’t know why countries can’t see how dangerous things have gotten and come to some sort of agreement rather than playing the bluff and bully game. That game can not end well for anyone. Even a nation which is neutral might not survive an all-out nuclear war.
