More on Project Blue Book
I am very interested in a new program on the History Channel. I’m talking about Project Blue Book. I have studied that project off and on for years and would like to see the History Channel take on what really happened. In case anyone doesn’t know about Project Blue Book it was a project set up by the United States Air Force in 1952. Interestingly 1952 was the year UFOs appeared over the White House several times. The Air Force had several studies on UFOs. The first started in 1947 and was named Project Sign. Then there was Project Grudge in 1949 and lastly Project Blue Book. When the UFOs appeared over the White House it prompted several studies and the result was the Air Force decided to dull interest in UFOs by having Blue Book supply information debunking everything. Even with this there were quite a few cases when even Blue Book could not supply an answer, but these cases usually never reached the public realm. Project Blue Book “investigated” at least 1638 sightings, which were listed.
Over the years I have spoken and written about some of these sightings. I would also like to mention again the fact the scientist which was attached to Project Blue Book was Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Dr. Hynek became a believer in UFOs being alien after years of listening to witness testimony and realizing some of the cases they were looking at had no earthly explanation. It will be interesting to see if the History Channel shows the drama between Hynek and the officer in charge of the project. It will also be interesting to see if some of the more challenging sightings are brought up. There is certainly plenty of material available for this to happen.
In the spirit of Project Blue Book here are some more interesting sightings which were reported. One sighting which has quite a few witnesses took place on September 15, 1962 over Oradell, New Jersey. Sightings took place at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Two bright discs had appeared at 5 p.m. and disappeared. They appeared again at 6 p.m. where two witnesses reported seeing one round object which had a fin on the top. Another object was reported at 7:30 p.m. and was said to be heading down toward the Oradell reservoir. Three more witnesses saw and heard the object hit the water. Another witness called the police reporting a bright object surrounded with lights. He said it seemed to be the size of a small plane and was about one-half mile away. After a few minutes that object took off and disappeared.
On April 18, 1962 an object was picked up by radars across the continent. Nellis Air Force Base picked up this speeding object. It was traveling at a high speed and seemed to be very maneuverable. As radars were tracking it across the country, eye witnesses were also reporting seeing it. Numerous witnesses reported seeing this object.
On February 19, 1962 a very strange object was reported by witnesses. The sighting took place at Dauphin Island, Alabama. Three people were driving south on the Dauphin Island toll bridge when they saw an object which was a reddish orange color. In the sky the object looked about one third the diameter of the sun. At first the object was a round shape, but right before the eyes of the witnesses the shape began to change and the object became cigar shaped. The witnesses stopped their car on the bridge and called in to a nearby Air Force base to report what they saw. At the same time two airmen from the base were coming from the opposite direction and they saw the object.
When a witness or witnesses see an object changing shape it has to be quite a shock, but recently scientists announced they had discovered a way for us to accomplish this. You can read about this in the journal Science.
One of the most famous sightings happened on September 19th and 20th, 1961. The witnesses were the famous Betty and Barney Hill. They saw a lenticular object with a double row of portholes and about six dark figures working inside. A light began to follow their car and it knocked them unconscious. They didn’t remember this experience right away, but pieces of the memory began to haunt them and they had terrible dreams of what happened. They were put under medical hypnosis and everything was brought back to their memory. They had been abducted and Betty had been shown a map of stars by the alien leader when she asked him where he came from. She remembered the star formation and in later years it was matched by an amateur astronomer named Fish and became known as the Fish map.
A sighting occurred on May 29, 1961 over Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida. A white-orange object was seen over the base by personnel on the ground, a fighter plane pilot from his plane and helicopter pilots. As the fighter plane drew closer to the UFO it disappeared. Air policemen saw the object moving and ground radar tracked the object. These witnesses knew what different types of aircraft looked like and knew this was not one of them.
Another sighting took place on April 24, 1961 about 200 miles from San Francisco, California. The pilot and navigator of a radar patrol plane were flying at about 11,000 feet when they saw a reddish-white round object and tracked it before it disappeared at the horizon.
Here is one sighting which was reported which sounds really crazy when we read it, but it is listed with Project Blue Book. On April 18, 1961 a man named Joe Simonton who lived in Eagle River, Wisconsin said he heard a whining sound and saw a strange object which was about 30 feet in diameter and 12 feet high. He said there were exhaust pipes around part of the object. It landed near his house and a door opened and a man about 5 feet tall came out. He was wearing a black turtle-neck sweater and a white band where a belt would be. He had on black pants and there was a white stripe on the sides. Simonton said he could see two others inside. The man asked him for water and he went and filled a jug and gave it to him. The man then gave Simonton three pancakes and the vehicle took off.
Sightings just don’t get any stranger than the one I just told you about.
