Are We Evolving?
It has been said we are evolving quicker than ever. Did you ever wonder what this is based on. According to A.I., it is based on the pressure put upon us by our environment. One of the things cited is improved health care, improved mobility and new dietary patterns. Excuse me, but I just don’t see these things being responsible, but I am nobody compared to the scientists who fostered these ideas. Still, I am entitled to my own opinions just like the rest of us are.
I feel like the scientists are barking up the wrong tree, or maybe A.I. has gotten it wrong. It seems to be in order to be advancing in evolution there would need to be bodily changes, such as bigger brains and some sort of other bodily changes perhaps. What about the use of cell phones and computers would they help advance evolution? While some might believe they would, I have to say I believe they make us dumber and could stop evolution if it really exists. The computers advance technology which there is no denying, but that is not the same as advancing evolution. We are already beginning to lose certain abilities because computers do them for us. Take cursive writing for example, we are rapidly losing the ability to write it and even losing the ability to read it.
We no longer have to be good at complex math problems because our machines will perform the calculations for us. The slide rule has become a thing of the past. We don’t even have to use our memories as much because the computer or cell phone makes it easy to find answers. Computers have dumbed us down and I would argue this point with anyone. We may seem smarter because we can get so many answers, but we are not, all we are doing is retrieving information.
Another thing we seem to have lost is the ability to find places to meet people. In a way this sort of limits the gene pool. When I was young, we used to go our every weekend and meet plenty of people and exchange ideas and go on dates. Today, there are so many young people staying at home and constantly on their computers. They really can’t tell what some people they meet online are like and yet there are many cases of people meeting their spouses this way. Marriages are down and many people just move in with each other without a strong commitment and in many of these cases it ends in disaster. I just don’t see how broken families advance evolution.
According to scientists there were many races which were human ancestors before we came along. I always wonder how they can prove without a doubt we sprang from them. Who is to say we weren’t brought here? Let me take this a bit further, who is to say that others were not also brought here by let’s say for the sake of argument extraterrestrials and each of them just couldn’t make it, so others were brought here until we made it and we proved we could not only survive, but advance in technology which the other races seemed to fail to do. It is said the Neanderthals were here for about 500,000 years and yet they seemed to get nowhere in technology. Why was this? They are thought to have had bigger brains than us. Were some beings giving them a chance that is why they lasted so long? It seems to me they just didn’t have the brain power.
We know there are some people on this planet who have special abilities. Even in our past there were those who stood out because of their advanced talents. Their I.Q. was extremely high, but sometimes they were what is known as savants. They were geniuses in one area, but even sometimes lacked the ability to take care of themselves. Srinivasa Ramanujan was a mathematical savant who became very famous. He was from India. He wouldn’t even eat unless forced, it was said, and he was such a genius in math he was sought out by many famous scientists. Here is one who was said to be a math savant you would have never suspected; I am talking about Archimedes.
It does make one wonder if we have ever had advanced evolutionary people who were mistakenly sent to a mental institution. Could there be people confined in one or more institutions somewhere in the world who are so smart they could change our lives, but instead they are being shot full of tranquilizers? How would we know? Would someone who was evolutionary advanced think different about many things than we do? I would think so at least to some point.
I don’t even know if it would be precise to call a very smart person evolutionary advanced. It is thought by many being evolutionary advanced means one possesses advanced survival skills and also advanced reproduction, but there is more. They are thought to have a large complex brain. As to this point, Einstein while having a high I.Q. did not have the highest one and many scientists thought his brain was wired differently than most. Could it be someone with a smaller brain than us could be more advanced? In nature sometimes brain size does not relate to intelligence. Blackbirds are extremely smart and can make small tools, yet dogs with much bigger brains are not as smart. Why is this? There is a strange connection between the smartest birds which are Parrots, Crows, Ravens and Jays. They all seem to have the largest high vocal centers.
So summarizing things, are we getting dumber or smarter, are we advancing in evolution? There is no doubt there are still plenty of smart people around, but do we credit this to the technological tools we have created that allowed them to seem smarter and more advanced, or were people a century ago before these tools were invented really smarter and more advanced than we are today, but didn’t have the tools to proceed further in their fields. Is there really evolution or will we find this business of matching bones and equating them with evolution from one creature to the next as being an evolutionary step is wrong? Somewhere along the way of this so-called evolutionary ladder we might just find out evolution was just in our heads and as new creatures were born, they mostly had nothing to do with other creatures born before them. On the other hand, will evolution be proved beyond a doubt or will there be a third alternative. That alternative might be evolution is correct in some cases, but not all.
