Should We Believe What We Read and Hear? There is a theory some people believe that states we should consider everything we are told is a lie until we have verified it. I am talking about everything down to the most insignificant of data. This includes what we hear and read on the news, but not only that, but what we are told by the government, advertisers, politicians and everyone one else. This theory includes what we hear from scientists, engineers and other professionals. It doesn’t mean we are being lied to by everyone, it just means there are so many lies out there everything we are told should be checked before we believe it and pass it on to others. Why would a theory like this have developed? The government is responsible for a good portion of this thinking along with corporations and even science. We can hear these lies every day if we pay attention. We hear lies every day when our new weapons systems are discussed. How many times have I and you heard how great our new F-35 fighter plane is? This has to be said to cover up the fact it is a dud in many ways. There are quite a few pilots who don’t want to fly it, because there are so many problems with the plane they are afraid for their lives. One of the things that really bothers me is the fact the plane is relatively slow. One of the planes it is replacing is the F-15 Eagle. The Eagle has an admitted top speed of 1,875 miles per hour. The F-35 is a lot slower. It is one of the most expensive planes of its type ever made and seems to rely on the fact it can launch its weapons from a distance. It is said pilots who have tested it claim it couldn’t beat the plane it replaces in a dog fight and is a dismal performer and yet we continue to tell the public how great it is. One has to wonder what dividends were given out for this contract. The same is true of our new aircraft carrier which ballooned from about 8 billion dollars to about 13 billion and can’t even launch more than a few planes as of the writing of this article, before its new electronic launching system has to have maintenance performed on it. It is not too good at catching planes either since its new electronic stopping system doesn’t work properly yet. I have seen plenty of news articles telling the public how great this ship is. One of the biggest disappointments in the last couple of decades is the Congress of the United States. It is petty and seems to thrive on revenge and “gotcha” tactics. Yet I have heard members bragging about all their accomplishments. They are quick to tell us about things they were responsible for and even then, when we investigate what they said we find all sorts of attachments to the bills they are taking credit for which are a disgrace. It seems just about every time a bill which is absolutely needed is the target for these unpleasant attachments. We never get the entire story and sometimes are just plain lied to. This reminds me of the time during a court hearing when I witnessed a judge give a very low-ball settlement to a person he considered not to bright. The judge saved the insurance company tens of thousands of dollars by convincing this person to take $8,000 when anyone else would have gotten at least $50,000 or more and then to make matters worse he said to that person he hopes he enjoyed all the money he had gotten. The man’s lawyer never objected so he was either very inept or was in on the scam. Many people fall for all the claims made by drug companies and they believe everything they are told. I personally can’t understand this, since the commercials now tell us things about each drug such as what they can do to you and how many can kill you. It seems many people don’t pay attention to this and never read the information which comes with the drugs. The drug companies run commercials showing a nice grassy field and happy people taking Drug X or Drug Y and yet if one investigates the drug sometime we find it has significant risks and doesn’t do much for us. There have been drugs withdrawn from the market by the FDA, but not many. It is believed about 35 drugs have been withdrawn since the 1970s. I wasn’t sure why the Federal Drug Administration would withdraw a drug, but I saw a reason listed on a site which claimed they got the info from the FDA so here it is. "… drug is removed from the market when its risks outweigh its benefits. A drug is usually taken off the market because of safety issues with the drug that cannot be corrected, such as when it is discovered that the drug can cause serious side effects that were not known at the time of approval." An example of this was Accutane. It was recalled because of an increased risk of birth defects. A certain car company told us how great their cars were for years. There was a problem with what they were telling us, because they knew of a defect what was said to have caused the loss of lives. The company knew about this for ten years according to an article by NPR which was published in 2014 on the website which highlighted Georgia Public Broadcasting. When we read the article, it may just destroy the faith some of us have in that company regarding keeping us safe. Did you ever notice how the news media goes right for the sensational stories or for the most sensational part of a popular story? On top of all this there are a lot of stories which are just plain false. Lately we have been hearing a lot about false news which has usually been thought of as political news, but fake news is everywhere. I remember one story which was printed in a popular newspaper. It said gorillas were going door to door in a village looking for a missing baby gorilla. The next day a retraction had to be printed. The original story appeared at the beginning of the newspaper, the retraction was in the back somewhere. Today with all the additional news media sites and social media sites we see plenty of false news, because anyone can say anything they want even if it isn’t true. So back to the original question, should we not believe anything we hear or read until we can verify it? Some believe this is true no matter where the statements or articles come from. |
