Miracles
There have been an incredible number of miracles which have taken place. Granted some of them were just misunderstood happenings, but others just can’t be explained. Sometimes when we look at everyday things, we don’t realize what a miracle they are. The mystery of life is such an example. Scientists try and explain life, but the best they can do is suggest certain chemicals and minerals somehow could make life possible. Another miracle is the planet itself. Think about it, it is in the perfect spot for life to thrive. We know from looking at other planets, most of the time planets are not in areas which are conducive to human life, but ours somehow happens to be there. There are all what I call natural miracles, and there are much more, but there are also what some call supernatural miracles, which have to be accredited to God, because there doesn’t seem to be any other answer to some of this stuff.
First of all, one of the most famous miracles is the miracle at Fatima, Portugal in 1917. What made this miracle so incredible was the number of people who saw it and the fact there doesn’t seem to be anyway to explain it, especially when you consider the state of technology in that year. It is said Mary the mother of Jesus appeared to three peasant children. They were asked to do certain things for several months and the children were asked to spread the word of God and Mary promised them something would happen to make people believe what they were saying. The children had five visits from Mary before the miracle at Fatima. On 13 October 1917 the prophesy the children had given came true. It was reported over 70,000 people showed up. As they watched, the sun began to move all over the sky. It came closer and then moved further away several times. Finally, the people believed what the children had been saying. This miracle has never been satisfactorily explained, except as a work of God.
A strange miracle occurred in the 17th century. A girl was grieving for her father and was having masses said for him. One day while she was at church, she saw a vision of her father surrounded by flames near the bottom of the altar and told the priest. He suggested she place a piece of material at the spot where she saw him. When she did, the material caught fire. Everyone in church saw the material catch fire. She had three masses being said for him. By the time the third mass was said, he appeared dressed in a white suit and rose into the sky heading for heaven.
Sometimes miracles happen and they are more personal. One pastor of a church had contacted cancer and was in a bad way. He had been given chemo for months and was getting his last treatment when the worst thing which could happen to him did. His appendix burst and he couldn’t be operated on because his blood would no longer clot because of the chemo. He lay in the hospital bed knowing he was going to die. He was not catholic, but was in a catholic hospital and there were passages from the bible read over the public address system every day which he could hear. He fell asleep knowing he would not wake up again, but the next day he did and so it went for the entire week. Somehow, he had recovered from the unrecoverable. It was truly a miracle.
Miracles can happen to the believers of any religion. The most important thing is for there to be a believer in God. There have even been cases where a non-believer was saved by a miracle from God. A man was in the hospital. He didn’t believe in God and was on his deathbed. As he lay there, he heard growls and noise coming from the hallway. Just then demons came into his room and dragged him out and fearsome dogs began to attack him. He remembered begging Jesus to save him and when he did, he was returned to his hospital bed and recovered. He spent the rest of his life honoring God and telling his story.
There are miracles happening all the time. One example are all the miracles which happen to people who visit Lourdes, in France. Many people, some with incurable illnesses, go to Lourdes hoping to be cured of some illness. What is incredible is, some are. A French nun went there in 2008. She had been fully disabled since 1980. She had such severe pain she was put on morphine by her doctors. She said she never asked to be cured while she was there. A blessing for the sick had been administered however and she could feel something happening to her body. She said a wave of warmth spread throughout her body and she suddenly could move. There was no scientific explanation for her recovery and it was declared a miracle.
Doctors called the following occurrence a miracle. Two boys were playing out in their yard one was 3 and the other 7 years old. It was a freezing day. The 3 year old fell into the family pool and went underwater. The 7 year old jumped in and managed to save his brother, but the cold had taken its toll on the older boy who slipped into a coma. He was taken to the hospital and was still unconscious weeks later and registered no brain activity. After a couple of months of this, his family was deciding about taking him off of the machines. His father would come every day and read to him even though there was no response. One day after the 3rd month the boy squeezed his father’s hand. When the father told the doctors they said it was just a muscle reaction since there was no sign of life. The next day however, a nurse reported he had squeezed her hand. About 2 days later he opened his eyes and recovered. The doctors couldn’t figure out how he survived and said it was truly a miracle.
There are a lot more miracles happening which we never hear about. God is in our lives a lot more than many of us suspect and He is watching over us. The important thing is what happens to us after we die. For many of us life is just the test , but the reward is great if we lived a good life, and sometimes He shows us he is still around and taking care of us.
