Archaeologists Dream Sites It is no secret I like archaeology. The cultures of past civilizations and even current ones are fascinating. One of the favorite places for archaeology searches is Egypt. It is just incredible how ancient Egyptians were able to create those structures which outlasted most other things on this planet. There is even more we have found out about the ancient Egyptians and that is, they were smart, very smart. Experts have testified the Great Pyramid at Giza was built so accurately; we would have a hard time duplicating it today. The great temples which were built by the ancient Egyptians were actually unequalled in some ways by future cultures. I am talking about some of the statues which were repeated along long walkways. Scientists found out something about them and it was some were exactly the same. I mean the right side of the faces and the left side of the faces were perfectly matched. This was totally unexpected and even today such precision puzzles us. How could a race without modern tools using only chisels and ropes have accomplished this? The ancient Egyptians must have decided to build such gigantic structures to make sure their gods would be impressed, at least that is my guess. Some might say the reason was so they could be easily seen, while others might think it was to show how important the gods were. It must have taken quite some thought on how to go about building those huge temples before they came up with the solution, which was doing it in layers. They would build the fist layer cover it with sand then build the next layer and so on, until the temple was finished, then dig the sand out and you had a temple. If an archaeologist wants more cultural variety the place to go to would be Turkey. Turkey had more civilizations invade them than probably any other country. I personally have to wonder why? First of all, ancient Turkey was Anatolia. Turkey has been around and populated for a very long time. The area seems to date back to the early Stone Age and maybe before. The Hatti and Hurrian civilizations were there from 2,500 to 2,000 B.C. At the same time Troy was founded and fell. Next, the Hatti and Hittites were in charge from 2,000 to 1,750 B.C. I could go on but I think you get the idea. It seemed like every famous ancient race left their mark in Turkey, such as the Greeks and the Romans, and a lot more. There are unanswered questions about some of the archaeological discoveries made in Turkey. One which comes to mind has to do with one of many of the underground cities which have been found. Can you imagine people who had nothing more than hand tools digging out underground cities which can hold 20,000 or more people? Some of these cities are several levels and well planned out with cisterns for water storage, cool areas for food storage, a level for sheltering animals, and many different areas, both large and small for people to live in. Some had huge stones which could be pushed into place to block passages. It was clear these people were prepared to defend themselves against enemies and this has led archaeologists to believe the underground cities were built to protect against invaders. At least one home in Turkey turned out to have an entrance through the basement to somewhere. The homeowner found it when doing work down there and decided to explore where it went. He could not believe his eyes when he found out the entrance led to an unexplored, underground city and it was huge. To this day a good portion of the city is still unexplored. There is just so many incredible structures to be found in Turkey, which were created by so many different cultures, it blows the mind. Another place which has many archaeological sites is China. Some are protected from the public and tourists and archaeologists would love to be able to get into them. One is the tomb of the first emperor. It is said to be huge with the landscape, rivers and heavens recreated. The rivers are said to be made of flowing mercury. It surely must have been a gargantuan task to build and with all that mercury it couldn’t have been very good for the workers. There are said to be quite a few pyramids in China and they have been planted over by the government and now are covered with grass, plants and trees. I always wondered why the government felt they had to hide the pyramids. Archaeologists love countries like Rome and Greece because as we all know they have some incredible archaeology sites. One of the problems is they have both been picked over heavily and it is much harder to find new sites, although it does happen. There are some buildings in Rome which are 2,000 years old and still open to the public. Could you imagine a modern building lasting that long, it would never happen. One country which has almost as long a Roman history as Rome is England. It seems Roman sites keep popping up. When the English went to build a road, they found ancient Roman villages. Another time they went to build a parking lot and found an ancient Roman tomb and so forth. It does make it a place that archaeologists love, because it still contains mysteries waiting to be found. As great as all this is to an archaeologist, the ultimate thrill will be when the archaeologists get into space and explore places like Mars and perhaps the moon. I bet you are saying there will be no archaeology on the moon because there is nothing there. There have been investigators who claim there are ruins on the moon. They go as far as to say they found evidence not only of ruins but of the remains of glass domes over some of the craters in some of the NASA photos where these objects were hidden from us. There is no denying the gem will be Mars. So many photos have shown unexplainable objects which point to life. I predict if archaeologists are allowed not only to go to Mars, but tell us about what they found, we will find out there was life on Mars once and it was intelligent. I bet archaeologists will be lining up for one of these missions, but I guess we will have to wait and see if any will be allowed to go there.
